Get to know the Baby Fairy.

Hi all, I am Amaya!
‘The Baby Fairy.’
I am a registered nurse, community-based doula, advanced holistic lactation consultant (in training), and nurse-midwifery student. I graduated in 2019 from Oral Roberts University (ORU) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, where my interest in perinatal health began. During my maternal health course and clinical rotation at ORU, I first heard about the grave disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes between black and white women in the United States. After completing my degree, I moved to Kansas City, KS. I began my career as a registered nurse in an acute care float pool, where I got medical surgical, telemetry, and acute-inpatient rehab nursing experience. After doing that for about 16 months, I returned to my passion for perinatal health. I relocated to Oklahoma City to begin working in an Obstetrics Special Care Unit (OBSCU), where women experiencing a high-risk pregnancy would stay long-term due to various pregnancy complications, including preeclampsia, diabetes, and more. This invaluable experience affirmed my love for maternal health and will be a part of me forever. In October of 2021, a year after working on OBSCU, I transitioned into my current position in Labor and Delivery. Labor and Delivery has always been my dream job & I feel so thankful and blessed to assist new souls in their journey earth-side.
In February 2022, I decided it was time to continue my education and pursue my desire to become a midwife. In August, I started the Doctorate of Nursing Nurse-Midwife program at Baylor University. I desire to be a part of empowering, person-centered, multi-ethnic, multicultural, safe, and non-judgmental spaces where birth is revered and the sacredness of pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum is restored. I completed community-based doula training with Tulsa Birth Equity Initiative in May. Recently, I have transitioned to an as-needed position at the hospital and have been spending more time working with two incredible nonprofit organizations in Tulsa and Oklahoma City.
My philosophy on health related to pregnancy, birth, and postpartum:
I have always been taught to care for the whole person, that includes mind, body, and spirit. This is especially important in pregnancy and beyond. These three components work together for optimal health and wellness. In regards to health one, cannot be considered without the other two. I believe in women’s ability to grow, birth, and nourish their babies. Pregnancy is a normal life event, and a continuation of your everyday life. Prioritizing mental, physical, and emotional health pre-pregnancy is essential to a healthy pregnancy and optimal healing in the postpartum period.
